Paddling

Sydney is best explored by water, there’s really no argument there. You can jump into a boat and paddle right underneath the harbour bridge, or head upstream in National Park. It’s incredible what is possible, and I know of many people that have (at some point) kayaked into work!

Paddling for me was all about getting the seating setup right. I played around with a bunch of different designs for a standard sea kayak and finally settled with a design that used a Bumfortable Kayak Seat with a block of wood (with padding) that I could lean back against. I played around with straps and so on to hold my torso in position. The key with anything that locks you into position is that you must be able to do a quick release in case you capsize. One of the first exercises we did was a capsize drill to practice getting back into the boat again.

More recently, I’ve started to paddle 6-person outrigger canoes with the Pacific Dragons in Glebe. They are an awesome club that didn’t hesitate to help out with sorting out a suitable seating set up. Although they do race, they also go on regular casual coffee runs on the weekend. Who know, maybe one day I’ll make it with them to the Molokai Crossing……

Coffee Run – Neutral Bay

The Pacific Dragons run regular Sunday morning coffee runs. These are meant to be casual paddling trips, but for someone new to outrigger paddling, they still are pretty intense runs! Head out from Blackwattle Bay, cross over to Goat Island, paddle under the Harbour...

Mackaway Bay

Kayaking is a brilliant way of exploring national parks and even more so for doing an overnight camping trip. Myall lakes offer a fantastic range of camping and kayaking options and we were keen to spend out Easter Break exploring the area. Before heading north, I...

Hawkesbury Canoe Classic

The Hawkesbury Canoe Classic is a famous paddling race in Sydney held every year in October. It started 40 years ago with a bunch of paddlers tackling the long stretch of the Nepean-Hawkesbury from Windsor to Brooklyn, and is a tradition that continues as strong as...

Blackwattle Bay

There are quite a few paddling clubs that operate out of Blackwattlle Bay - kayaks, dragon boats, outrigger canoes, rowing boats and so on. It's a great access point from a small inner west suburb that enables you to easily access to main harbour area and beyond. I've...
